There are many reasons why someone would want to purchase a swimming pool. For some, a pool is a social hub; a fun and exciting place where friends and neighbors gather to splash and thrash. For others, a pool is a perfect getaway; a relaxing, “zen-like” oasis to unwind and escape from the daily grind. Still others use their pool as a part of their healthy lifestyle; a place for swimming laps or water resistance and hydro-fit training. Whatever motivates you to purchase a pool, the most important thing to do before forging ahead is to formulate a plan.

Most people decide on a pool shape and size after a fifteen minute discussion sitting across from a salesperson at a local pool dealer. The last place you want to decide what pool to buy is at a pool dealer! Of course your salesperson will listen to your needs. He or she might even visit your home to take measurements and make sure don’t have overhead hydro wires or anything that might disqualify you from obtaining a pool permit. A pool salesperson, however, can only give you pool purchasing advice based on cursory information, at best.

Now most pool dealers are reputable and do have your best interests at heart. They aren’t intentionally misleading consumers. In fact, your average pool retailer will go through considerable effort to hire the right person and train them as highly qualified pool experts. These experts, however, are usually good salespeople that are educated on the ins and outs of the products and accessories they sell. They are product experts, not trained or certified landscape designers.

Outdoor kitchens, gazebos, hot tubs, spill-over spas, waterfalls and fire pits are all features that are commonly considered in a poolscape. A certified landscape designer will help you assess which features are right for you and help you chose the right pool size and style that fits a global plan. Whether you’re looking for a minimalist design or an elaborate and inclusive back yard oasis, a trained landscape designer will help you make educated choices. Not everyone wants a Tiki bar or hammock in their back yard, but there’s nothing more frustrating than realizing you’ve excluded something you really wanted after the in ground pool is installed.

A swimming pool and backyard makeover really is a major investment–one that benefits greatly from a little forethought and expert advice. If you’re considering a pool purchase, consult with us before visiting your pool dealer. You’ll be glad you did!

If you already have a pool and are looking to spruce things up, we’d love to work with you and help you design and build your dream backyard makeover.
